WEFT 2003

As the world moves into the new Millenium, there is an urgent need of recognition that Arts and Crafts play a vital role in the social, cultural and economic life of humanity. With the growing concern for world ecology, the role that the artisans and craftspeople play in the use of traditional and natural fiber, dyes and other material cannot be overstressed.

The World Eco Fiber & Textile (WEFT) Forum 2003 brought together international delegates to exchange latest information gathered through recent research, work and experiences in the art of decorating and enriching textiles.

A three day forum (19th - 21st September, 2003) with 9 main sessions was held in Kuching, Sarawak at Kuching Hilton. Concurrently, an International Exhibition/Bazaar on Eco-Fibers and Textiles was also held.

Society Atelier Sarawak, the Malaysia Handicraft Development Board and the Sarawak Craft Council organised the exhibition / competition of the Statewide 'Pua Kumbu' Warp-Ikat Weaving and the Bemban Mat Plaiting. Over 400 delegates, weavers, craft-artisans, scholars, collectors and gallery owners from over 25 countries participated in this event.
