Malaysia-Kuala Lumpur

 

The 25th Asia Pacific Regional Assembly was organised by the Malaysian Handicrafts Development Corporation in Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia during September 18th and 19th 2001. . The country report was based on "Product Development and Marketing". A Seminar was organized on "Analysis on Raw Materials".

- Cotton and Silk presented by India
- Wood by Indonesia
- Masi or Tapamaking by Fiji
- Bamboo by Malaysia

The 25th Regional Assembly adopted a regional plan-of-action, Seven Main Strategies and Plan-of-Action for Craft Development 2000 to 2010.

The seven programmes of action presented were:

(i)  
Fostering research and development and enhancing efforts in information sharing

(ii)  
Ensuring availability of raw materials

(iii)  
Initiating support for craft facilities

(iv)  
Promoting craft education

(v)  
Expanding market and product development

(vi)  
Creating visibility and awareness for crafts

(vii)  
Strengthening the status of the craftspersons


The 2nd Craft Contest for the Asia Pacific Region was held for Mats and Natural Fibre in Kuala Lumpur. There were 19 entries. A jury consisting of Ms. Raja Fuziah bte Raja Tun Uda of Malaysia, Kun Surapee Rojanavongse of Thailand and Mr. Dominique Bouchart of Paris judged the entries and the following prizes were given away:

  • Ist prize of US 300 dollars was given to Ms. Tara ak. Temenggong of Malaysia,
  • IInd prize of US 200 dollars was given to Ms. S.M.T. Pushpa Rani of India and
  • IIIrd prize of US 100 dollars was given to Ms. Di Vela Moli of Fiji.
