Kamaladevi Awards and Kamala Sammaan

 

KAMALADEVI AWARDS

Four awards were presented to the craftspeople during the Centenary Celebrations. The awardees were honoured with a shawl, a certificate and a sum of US 105 dollars (INR 5000/-).

The following are the awardees:

1. EXCELLENCE IN CRAFTS SKILL

a. Smt. Masto Devi (Embroiderer from Chamba)
b. Shri. Dhiren Karmakar (Dokra metal worker from West Bengal)

2. CONTRIBUTION TO THE CRAFT FIELD

a. Shri. Chintalpathi Venkatapathi Raju (Etikopakka lacquerware from Andhra Pradesh)
b. Shri. Imran Hussian (Cane - Bamboo from Assam)


KAMALA SAMMAAN

The Kamala Sammaan award was newly instituted in the year 2003. The criteria for nomination to this award is that the person should have followed the footsteps of Smt. Kamaladevi Chattopadhyay and contributed to the development of crafts and to the upliftment of craftspersons.

In 2003, the award was given to three awardees. They were presented with a silver medallion in the shape of a lotus, as "Kamala" means "lotus" in Sanskrit.

His Excellency the Governor of Karnataka Mr. T. N. Chaturvedi presented the awards to the awardees:

3. Mrs. Siva Obeyesekere

The Kamala Sammaan for the year 2004 was presented to Mrs. Vimala Rangachar - Chairperson of the Crafts Council of Karnataka. Mrs. Rangachar is a creative social worker and all through her life has been wedded to theatre, dance, music and handicrafts. She is also the Secretary of the MES College, Vice-President of the Natya Institute of Kathak and Coreography, Vice-President MEWS Ladies Club, Hony Secretaryof the Seva Sadan Orphanage and Secretary, ADA Rangamandira, Bangalore. The award was presented to her on 9th February, 2004 by the Governor of Tamil Nadu His Excellency Thiru PS Ramamohan Rao.
